Driving on Black Ice in Greensboro

We may be headed for warmer temperatures for the next few days but Old Man Winter is sure to breathe some blistery conditions on Greensboro again during January, February and March.

If you have to be out driving in hazardous conditions here are some tips from the NC Highway Patrol.

-Reduce your speed. Driving at the regular speed limit will reduce your ability to control the car if you begin to slide.
-Leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles.
-Bridges and overpasses accumulate ice first. Approach them with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on the bridge.
-If you do begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. Do not apply the brakes, as that will cause further loss of control of the car.

At Rice Toyota we will check your brakes, tires, antifreeze, and battery to make sure you don't get stranded in freezing weather. Drop by and see us anytime at 2630 Battleground Avenue for a complimentary winter check up.

If you happen to be in one of the hundreds of traffic accidents that occur during icy winter weather, we can fix your car in record time at Rice Collision Center. We also have a fleet of rental cars to get you through the repair process.

05-06 Avalon and 04-06 Highlander Recall

Toyota Announces Intent to Voluntarily Recall Certain Toyota Avalon and Highlander, and Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 Vehicles to Replace a Brake Master Cylinder Seal

Click for Customer FAQs for Brake Master Cylinder Recall

TORRANCE, Calif., October 20, 2010 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it will conduct a voluntary Safety Recall involving approximately 740,000 – 2005 through 2006 Avalon, 2004 through 2006 Highlander (non Hybrid) and Lexus RX330, and 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 vehicles sold in the United States to address the possibility that a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.

This action follows an announcement made by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan on October 21, 2010 (Japan).

The Toyota genuine brake fluid used during vehicle assembly for vehicles sold in the United States contains polymers. The polymers act as lubricants for certain brake system components. If during vehicle maintenance, brake fluid is used that does not contain such polymers or only small amounts, a part of the internal rubber seal (brake master cylinder cup) located at the end of the brake master cylinder piston may become dry and may curl during movement of the piston. If this occurs, a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.

If the brake warning lamp has illuminated and the vehicle continues to be operated without refilling the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir, the driver will begin to notice a spongy or soft brake pedal feel and braking performance may gradually decline.

Owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning in early November 2010. Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the brake master cylinder cup with a newly designed one at no charge to the vehicle owners.

Detailed information and answers to questions are available to customers at www.toyota.com/recall or www.lexus.com/recall and the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25 LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987.

5 Steps to Buying A New Car

1. Do your Research
Know which style of vehicle is the best car to suit your needs. It is easy to get ditracted when you get on the lot and see all the shiny, new, technology filled automobiles. You may even be tempted to test drive that convertible, when you know you will be driving in snow 5 months of the year. And, you should have a good idea of what you can afford to pay for the car you want. Do you really need that V6 or would you rather go with the 4 cylinder model and put a little extra money into your retirement account?

2. Use incentives and rebates
An incentive is anything that gives you an added reason to buy a particular car. In the car world, incentives comes in the form of a cash rebate, free vehicle maintenance, or low-interest financing (APR).
Example of Cash Back: A car priced at $25,000 but the manufacturer is offering $3,000in cash back for a final price of $25,000.
Toyota and Scion are currently offering customers a coupon booklet for all scheduled maintenance services required under Toyota’s maintenance guide for up to two years / 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is estimated to be $500 value.
Example of APR: APR is being offered at 0.%, that would mean that a $25,000 car financed for five years at 6 percent would have a monthly payment of about $535. But with zero-percent financing, the payment is roughly $461. That's a huge savings to you.
Check RiceToyota.com/specials for Special Offers from Toyota and Scion.

3. Price the Car
The incentives and rebates you researched and printed in the previous step are automatically factored into the final price. In other words, the incentive is deducted from the lowest negotiated price. If you are going to use low-interest financing, calculate your final buying price, then use our payment calculator to find your monthly payment.

4. Sell Your Old Car, if you need to
Research what your car is worth with our Black Book tool. The you can sell it yourself in the newspaper, on ebay or Craigs List. If you are trading in your old car to a dealer, you will probably not get as much money toward the price of a new car as you would have if you'd sold it yourself to a private party. However, trading in offers some advantages. Let the dealer worry about findign the buyer for a hard-to-sell car, running advertisements, and dealing with tire-kicking buyers, or long DMV lines. In some states, you will even pay less sales tax on a deal that involves a trade-in.

5.Go for a Test Drive
Schedule a test drive at your local dealer. Be sure to share with the salesman your wants and needs as well as your budget range. That way he or she will be able to direct you to the models that best suit your requirement, without a lot of time wasting or feining interest in something that you know simply won't do. Keep an open mind too, the car you have looked at online may not be the one you buy, The salesman know these cars and chances are they have had another customer with your similar wants and needs in front of them before. If they have a suggestion that doesn't break your budget or take you in a new direction all together, give it a chance.

6.Make it Yours
Make your decision, share the incentives you have researched, negotiate a price and sign the papers. If you are a first time car buyer and want to know more about what to bring with you check out our Tips for First Time Car Buyers

Rice Toyota Reviews

Thanks to our customer Lisa Parks for posting this picture of her and her Rav4 on our Facebook page.

Rice Toyota Reviews. We work hard to provide a car buying experience that is hassle free. Here is what some of our customers are saying about us online.

Rice Toyota: A Great Buying Experience‎‎
By Zac - Aug 17, 2010

I'll second what's been said about Rice: their customer service is exceptional. Anticipating a lot of hassle, I walked onto the lot last week knowing that I needed a vehicle and only had so much to spend. Rice salesman David Senkus worked diligently to find me a car that was right for me. He shepherded me through the necessary paperwork and proved himself to be knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. I am thrilled to be driving a new Corolla and would gladly do business again with Rice in the future.‎

Best Dealership - Hands Down!‎‎
By maharashwan - Aug 1, 2010

Just took delivery of my 4th vehicle from Rice Toyota (Tundra Double Cab 2010), every time I couldn't be happier, my salesperson (Mark Ellis) always made the purchasing expereince a breeze, this time it took less than an hour at the dealership to turn in my trade-in and pick up my new truck. The whole process started with a phone call, they didn't have what I was looking for so the got one for me, the price was exactly $304 less than the lowest price offere by my local dealer (I live in Winston-Salem), he even threw in a free cargo net and a car washing kit. Do yourself a favor, save time and money and give them a call. Maha R.‎

Rice Toyota Internet Sales‎‎
By shbrown - Jul 31, 2010

Had a wonderful experience at Rice Toyota with David Senkus. I was comparing the Honda Accord/Civic to the Toyota Camry/Corolla. In the end I decided to buy a 2010 Toyota Camry. David was excellent to work with during the whole process and I love my Camry. Thanks Rice Toyota!‎

Supercharged 5.7L V8 Toyota Tundra

Did you hear about the new TRD 5.7L V8 supercharger we just got in at Rice Toyota in Greensboro?

With the supercharger in place, the Tundra's horsepower output jumps from 381 hp @ 5,600 rpm to 504 hp at 5,500 rpm. Torque is multiplied from 401 lb/ft @ 3600 rpm to 550 lb/ft @ 4000 rpm.

Here’s what’s amazing – this whole system is still 50-state emissions legal! And, if it’s installed by an authorized Toyota dealer, such as Rice Toyota in Greensboro NC, the Tundra’s 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty remains intact, too. [If it’s installed by anyone else, the supercharger kit is covered by a 1-year/12,000-mile warranty.]

If you’re going to have that much power on tap, it only makes sense to beef up the brakes and add larger tires to handle the power. And these TRD components do the trick.

If you have a Tundra – think about a supercharger. Think real hard – the fun quotient is unbeatable. If you don’t have a Tundra… think about buying one and adding this combo of the supercharger, big brakes and big wheels and tires.

To purchase your own TRD Supercharger click here.

Want to know more? Send us an email parts@ricetoyota.com or come by and talk with one of our knowledgable Toyota Tundra enthusiasts about adding the ride amount of muscle to your ride.

Spring Cleaning for Your Car

Wheel and Tire Cleaning
Cleaning the wheels and tires regularly is just as important as washing the exterior of your Toyota. And not just for appearance sake, but for protection too. Brake dust can pit and damage the surface of the rims if left to sit for an extended period of time.
When you wash your vehicle, clean the wheels first. Make sure that you do not use any of the rags, sponges, brushes, or even the bucket that you used on your wheels to clean any other part of the vehicle. Brake dust and other contaminates can scratch your vehicle's finish.
Ask Rice Toyota for Toyota Wheel Cleaner. It's safe and effective for chrome and alloy wheels, as well as plastic and rubber components.
Also, don't forget to put the finishing touch on your tires with Spray-n-go Toyota Tire Shine. To purchase, visit, click or call Rice Toyota. 2630 Battleground Avenue Greensboro, North Carolina

2010 Prius Voluntary Recall

Customer FAQ: Prius recall

1. What is the problem with the 2010 Prius?
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) in the 2010 model-year Prius, in normal
operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control
system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some owners have reported
experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the
brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is
activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.
2. How is Rice Toyota responding to this Prius issue?
Rice Toyota has run a list of all our customers who own a Prius affected by this recall. We are calling each and every one of them, if we cannot reach them by phone we will send them an email. We have already begun fixing 2010 Prius models. The fix takes less than 20 minutes. Please call our service department if you have any questions 336-288-1190.
3. Why does this only impact 2010 Prius models?
First- and second-generation Prius vehicles use a different ABS system and are
not involved in this campaign.

How Toyota Will Fix Recalled Vehicles

What is the solution Toyota announced to fix sticking accelerator pedals?

Toyota’s engineers have developed and rigorously tested a solution that is both effective and simple.
A precision-cut steel reinforcement bar will be installed into the accelerator pedal assembly, thereby eliminating the excess friction that has caused pedals to stick in rare instances.

What is the problem that could cause accelerators to stick and led to the recall?

The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable.

This friction device includes a “shoe” that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation. Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open.
How does a steel reinforcement bar solve this problem?
The steel reinforcement bar will reduce the surface tension between the friction shoe and the adjoining surface. With this reinforcement in place, the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick is eliminated.

How does Toyota know that this solution will be effective?

Nothing is more important to Toyota than the safety and satisfaction of our customers, and we have high confidence in our solution for fixing our customers’ vehicles. We have confirmed the effectiveness of the newly reinforced pedals through rigorous testing on pedal assemblies that had previously shown a tendency to stick.

When can I get my vehicle fixed?

We are beginning to contact customers to let them know when to bring in their vehicles for the fix, and some of them will be notified as early as this week.

At Toyota, our highest priority has been to quickly and effectively address the needs of owners of affected vehicles. Parts to reinforce the pedals are already being shipped for use by dealers.

How long will it take for a dealer to repair my automobile?

The actual repair involves about 30 minutes’ work.

Is the repair covered by warranty? Will drivers have to pay any money out of pocket for this work?

Toyota will cover all repair costs associated with this work.

Does the reinforced pedal feel any different?

Drivers should not notice any change in the feel of the pedal.

Is my car safe to drive if it has not yet received this solution?

To be clear, the condition is rare and generally does not occur suddenly. It can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.

You should tell customers that if they experience an accelerator pedal that is hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation, they should drive the vehicle to a safe location, shut off the engine and contact a Toyota dealer for assistance

You can also tell the customer that if he or she experiences an accelerator pedal that sticks in a partial open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance.

What if my vehicle is also affected by the floor mat recall? Which will be addressed first?

We are working to coordinate the pedal entrapment and the sticking pedal recalls to minimize the number of customers who will have to have two service visits.

What do I do if I experience a sticking accelerator pedal before my car receives the remedy? Should I bring my car to a dealer?

Customers who experience an accelerator pedal that is hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation should drive the vehicle to a safe location, shut off the engine and contact a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance
Otherwise, no action is required at this time unless you feel you are experiencing this condition. We will begin contacting customers to let them know when to bring in their vehicles for the fix, and some of them will be notified as early as this week.

Can I return my vehicle to Toyota if I purchased it in the five-day period between when the recall was announced and Toyota stopped the sale on my vehicle? What are my options?

Toyota will work with customers who have concerns about their new vehicles on a case-by-case basis. Customer should also contact the Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Which models are affected by the sticky accelerator pedal recall/stop sale?

Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall and suspension of sales is confined to the following Toyota Division vehicles:

* Certain 2009-2010 RAV4,

* Certain 2009-2010 Corolla,

* 2009-2010 Matrix,

* 2005-2010 Avalon,

* Certain 2007-2010 Camry,

* Certain 2010 Highlander,

* 2007-2010 Tundra,

* 2008-2010 Sequoia

Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids are not affected by this action and will remain for sale.

Further, Camry, RAV 4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin with "J" are not affected.

What is a “VIN” and how do I find it on my automobile?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character sequence of numbers and letters that is used by the automobile industry to uniquely identify motor vehicles. It can be viewed through the windshield on the driver’s side at the front of the dashboard.

In addition, the VIN number is also located on a sticker located the driver’s side pillar, with the tire inflation information and on the vehicle’s registration.
Why are mechanically similar Lexus and Scion vehicles not affected by this recall?
The recall affected pedal is confined to one of Toyota’s suppliers. That supplier’s pedals are not used on Lexus and Scion vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

1. What is the condition that has prompted Toyota to take this action?
In rare instances, there is a possibility that CTS accelerator pedal mechanisms may
mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.
2. What is the likelihood that my vehicle will experience this condition? The condition is rare and generally does not occur suddenly. It seems to occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.
3. Are you continuing to investigate other models?Toyota is confident that all models that contain the potentially sticking pedals have
been identified.
4. Why has Toyota stopped selling the affected vehicles?Until Toyota has remedied the potential for sticking accelerator pedals, a sales
suspension of vehicles with the CTS pedals is required by Federal law .
5. How long will this stop sale be in effect? This stop sales/delivery action will only be in place until Toyota is able to provide
service repair parts and instructions to dealers so that they can remedy their involved vehicles. Involved vehicles may be made available for retail sale as soon as they are repaired, as long as the vehicle also meets the requirements of recall 90L if applicable.
6. When do you expect to have a remedy?
We believe that a remedy may be announced as early as next week and that the
necessary parts and instructions will become available later in the month of February.
7. What options are you exploring for a remedy? We are reviewing a number of different options, but are aiming for a simple repair
which does not require disassembly of the accelerator pedal unit.
8. What should I do if I believe my vehicle is affected by this condition, i.e. I have noticed that my accelerator pedal is hard to depress, slow to return or is not smooth during operation. What should I do?You should bring the vehicle to a stop at the nearest safe location and shut off the engine. Then contact any Toyota dealer for assistance.
9. What if you experience a sticking accelerator pedal while driving? Each circumstance may vary, and drivers must use their best judgment, but Toyota recommends taking one of the following actions:
• If you need to stop immediately, the vehicle can be controlled by stepping on the
brake pedal with both feet using firm and steady pressure. Do not pump the brake
pedal as it will deplete the vacuum utilized for the power brake assist.
• Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
• If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the engine OFF. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
• If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.
• If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.
10. If I am an owner of one of the affected vehicles, what action do I need to take?
Toyota is working quickly to develop a remedy for this potential condition and will issue owner notifications in the future. No action is required at this time unless you feel you are experiencing this condition. If you are experiencing this condition, immediately
contact your nearest Toyota Dealer for assistance.
11. Toyota stated that this did not affect new/low mileage vehicles, has the situation changed?Generally that seems to be the case; however, the law requires that the entire universe of new vehicles identified in our recall notice must be included in the stop sale.
12. Why are you stopping production at your factories?Beginning on February 1, 2010 production is being temporarily suspended at five North
American production facilities to assess and coordinate activities related to the recall announced on January 21. This also allows us to expedite customer repairs by
diverting parts, originally slated for production vehicles, to dealerships for their use in remedying this condition in customer vehicles.
13. What should I do if I still have questions or concerns?
If you still have questions or concerns that have not been addressed here, please
contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
The Toyota Customer Experience Center hours are:
Mon - Fri, 5:00 am - 6:00 pm PST
